Training and Capacity Building of the Sugar Sector and Technology Providers

The action supports the establishment of local knowledge, capital, and availability of financial services for High Pressure Cogeneration that is result in long term sustainability of the action. The National Bagasse Power Support Cell at Pakistan Sugar Mills Association is acting as a one stop shop to offer technical, financial and regulatory assistance to members of PSMA. Based on the evaluation, a standard has been developed for minimal requirements for HPC equipment and operation guidelines to optimize efficiency and minimize environmental and health impacts.

Establishment of a National Bagasse Power Support Cell at the Pakistan Sugar Mills Association (PSMA)

The action has set up a National Bagasse Power Support Cell which is serving as strategic one-stop shop providing professional information and services to all aspects of inquiries and requests related to biomass power and co-generation development in Pakistan. The cell also took the lead in the development of standardized technical specifications based on regional best practices for high pressure equipment design and operation, and preparation of project implementation tender documents based on consultation among technology providers and sugar mills.

Development of Standardized technical specifications for HPC technology

Together with PSMA and technology providers, the action has conducted an assessment of available designs and indigenous manufacturing capacity as a basis to formulate the standardized technical Specifications for HPC Technology. This has served as the basis for the technology manufacturer’s training which is being provided to companies manufacturing HPC equipment, to inform about the standard developed, and enable them to produce high performing systems. The HPC technology manufacturers are getting benefit from this as it is contributing to build trust in the technology. This is creating an incentive for the manufacturers to produce equipment with the highest possible quality.

In-house trainings and capacity building of Technology Providers to develop standardized HPC technology solutions and Creating B2B linkages between local and Indian technology providers of HPC systems

The training programme has developed in conjunction with the manufacturers, based on training needs assessment and staff capacity assessment. The action is providing services for In-house training to the technology providers. This has included review of design procedure, material selection, fabrication methodology and commissioning procedures. It has been ensured that essential local capacity is developed, resulting in reduced cost of technology and technology indigenization. Special emphasis is being made to develop business to business linkage between local and Indian technology manufacturers.

Training of technical staff of sugar mills on standardized design and technology selection

The action is holding training sessions for sugar mill’s technical staff. They are being trained on the standardized design of HPC, its benefits, how to evaluate different technological offers, and select the optimum system for their mill. National Bagasse Support Cell is leading these trainings and offering subsequent assistance to sugar mills in preparing tender documents and selection of technology suppliers.

Development of Business Cases of HPC System

This activity is assisting the existing sugar mills to come to a concrete calculation on the investment and advantages of having HPC technology by developing the sample business case studies. The action is also evaluating both options (1) export of surplus electricity to the national grid or (2) establishment of allied units for utilization of excess electricity and environmental benefit.

04 day comprehensive technical training for Sugar Mill staffs on O&M of Bagasse based High Pressure Cogeneration system in Lahore & Karachi

IHT Pakistan organized the specialized O&M Training for Sugar Sector under the umbrella of HP Cogen-Pak in Lahore & Karachi. This project is funded by EU under Switch Asia Programme. The four days training program continued from 10th July 2017 to 13th July 2017 in Avari, Lahore, Pakistan & 17th July 2017 to 20th July, 2017. The OMS (Pvt) Ltd was the resource organization, which provided expert trainers for different aspects of the training.

Two training workshops on Clean Development Mechanism for Bagasse based HP Cogeneration Plants in Sugar sector of Pakistan

HP Cogen-Pak organized two training workshops on Clean Development Mechanism for Bagasse based HP Cogeneration Plants in Sugar sector of Pakistan. This project is funded by EU under Switch Asia Programme. First workshop was held on Monday, 9th October, 2017 in Avari Hotel Lahore, Pakistan to cover mills in Northern part of country and 2ndtraining workshop was conducted on 12th October, 2017 at Mövenpick Hotel, Karachi to cover mills in Southern part of the country.
